Are you living your best life? 4 Questions you need to ask yourself, NOW
I once had a client come in and ask me a very odd question. “Jill, is there such a thing as a Non-Playable Character, like in video games or in the Matrix?”
I asked him to expand on his question since I didn’t quite get what he was asking, and he said, “You know, how when you meet people in life, and they are just there taking up space but not really living?”
I laughed and said I was pretty sure that wasn’t a thing, but he did make me think.
In the video game world, there are things called “Non-Playable Characters” (NPC’s), which are characters in the background, doing their thing, but they are more like scenery and not part of the game; they are just programming. A real character can and does interact with them, but unlike the dwarf next to you there is no real person controlling their actions; it’s all proscribed.
Oddly enough, even if you don’t play video games you may have had to deal with one of these in the past and not known it. Ever try to use the “chat” box on the side of, let’s say, your cable comapany’s website? You may think you are dealing with a person; after all, you do get a name, but in reality it’s sometimes a bot, which is why you can go back and forth for half an hour asking the same question 20 different ways and never get an appropriate answer, then your husband laughs at you when you are yelling that “Time Warner cable’s chat people are so stupid!!” “Babe, you know that’s just a bot, right?” No, I did not know!! Grrrr …
Anyways!
There are people in life that you know, maybe even yourself, who aren’t really living life. They are just going through the motions, never challenging their self, just accepting life at a level and not trying to make things better or happier. While there is nothing wrong with that, there is so much richness and joy to be had in trying something new.
If you feel like life has lost a bit of its luster, it’s time to step out of the role of “Non-Playable Character” and start really living. Ask yourself these questions:
1) Is it time to try something new?
2) Is it time to consider a job/career change?
3) When was the last time I had a vacation and when can I go again?
4) What sounds like FUN right now?
Try to come up with new fun things to do that you haven’t done before, preferably something that challenges your intellect and makes you think.
Don’t just sit on the sidelines in the game of life, particularly if it’s your life. Get in the game and do your best to make it fun.
