Discipline says: “This is a problem for me so I will take these steps to combat it.
Self-control says: “There is no problem, you are just weak and everyone else can handle it, why can’t you?”
Discipline says: “I acknowledge that certain behaviors or foods are not good for me so I will work hard to limit or eliminate these behaviors or my attachment to those substances.
Self-control says: “Everyone else can do this and not get addicted, you are bad for not being able to do this. Call Jill and she will fix it, so you have self-control” Jill says-great idea but that’s not how it works, but thanks for thinking of me.
Discipline says: “Lets acknowledge our weaknesses and challenges and work toward a realistic sustainable solution” Discipline sees human nature for what it is and acknowledges there is a lot of grey in the world.
Self-control says: “there is only good and bad, and you are bad if you consume those things and good if you don’t. Gray? There is not grey.”
In General:
Self-control is about trying to make the part of you that wants to emotionally eat, emotionally spend or engage in any kind of non-life enhancing behavior feel so bad that it will change then feel bad that it’s not doing enough.
Discipline acknowledges that there is an underlying problem or weakness that keeps us from easily giving up a behavior that is not good for us. But rather than trying to strong arm yourself discipline works towards a more realistic solution.
Bottom line:
I will admit the black and white all or nothing approach of self-control does work for some people, but the vast majority respond better to the “let’s live in the real-world” self-discipline approach to problem solving and changing your habits.
I highly recommend you look at your challenges with a realistic eye and work on solutions that balance both your need to get things fixed with an understanding of you as a human and what that really means.
Bring love for self and understanding into any change you are trying to make to be successful and know that no matter what, you are loved.
