How do deal with “I just can’t deal with that right now”
Feeling overwhelmed? Want to rage at the next person who asks you for something? Or at the next nasty thing in the mail like a letter from the DMV with the dreaded words “Smog inspection required!”
We’ve all been there, some of us many times already today in fact. But the best way to go from bad to worse, then on to a lot worse is to put everything in the “can’t deal with this pile” and forget about it. Sometimes life like your hall closet, just gets so full of stuff and it needs to be cleared out.
Time to fix this and here’s how:
Start by reframing:
Change “I can’t deal with this” to “What small thing can I do to deal with this?”
So, let’s look at what small things you can do.
Everyone knows you can’t schedule your crisis but there are a few things you can schedule.
The calendar is your friend: Schedule a time on your calendar to deal with that thing from the DMV, that form you need to fil out, that errand you need to run. And set yourself up for a pedicure too, you deserve it.
Clear some stuff from you schedule: Oh, I know how much you love to volunteer for every worthy cause, but right now you are the worthiest cause so write them a check instead and tell them you need to take a break from whatever volunteer thing you are doing. You may get some push back but don’t cave, not this time.
NO: is your new favorite word for when someone asks you for something, even that homeless guy who wants a piece of that pizza you just picked up for your family because cooking was too much right now. Trust me, they will be ok and so will you even if you have to say no.
Delegate: Did you know there are people in the world who will gladly take some coin in exchange for handling some of your errands and even household chores? I bet you did, and I bet you even know where to find them. Don’t be cheap pay someone to help you.
Be alone: Right now, a few minutes alone to contemplate life would really help most people feel better. Even if involves creating a bogus errand so you can listen to the Top Gun Theme song in your car a few times at full blast. Make that happen!
Don’t let important things go while you continue to give energy to the lesser things on your list. You can handle it; I believe in you.
I know things are a lot right now, they are for everyone, but good things are coming too so try to make space for all of it. And know that you are loved.
