How to know when its time to fire your boss
“I love what I do but I hate the people I work for and I am underpaid.” I probably hear this once a week in my office from someone who is clearly talented and passionate about what they do but who is stuck working in a situation that is just not cool. I too have said that many times before I decided to quit the “job game” and start a business.
These people feel stuck, trapped, don’t know what to do, and are a little intimidated by the idea of going job hunting again. Well, this is what I think you should do. Set the idea of a job (Just Over Broke) aside for a minute and think about a way to create a business using the talents you have. Something where you decide your salary, you decide your hours, and you decide who you work with.
Oh, but, Jill, I don’t have any idea what I would do.
I didn’t either before I started my business. I just knew I didn’t want to continue to make someone else rich with my skills in sales while never creating anything for myself with my own name on it.
Start by looking at your hobbies. In my case my side hustle was hypnotherapy, which I started learning during a brief layoff and I kept practicing on friends, family, and even my cats before realizing “people will pay me for this” but even more importantly “this is fun!!”
Think big picture and ask yourself what your real talents are, the ones that would never be listed on a resume. Things like:
-Are you the diplomat at work that helps everyone get along?
-Are you the counselor at the office everyone tells their problems to?
-Are you the one who anticipates challenges and starts fixing them before there is even a problem?
-Did you save your last company millions of dollars by streamlining a process and got little more “thank you,” if that?
You need to start by acknowledging with yourself the qualities that you have that make you unique. Then start to think about the things, especially hobbies, that bring you joy. In my case I was the ship’s counselor at just about every job I ever had even though most the time my title was some variation of “sales.” I remember thinking “wouldn’t it be cool to get paid for all the advice I give people for free.” It is, by the way, really cool.
You may not come up with something right away but just putting your mind in that direction starts to get you thinking about the different ways you can be of service to the world that would be way more fun than your day job.
As a side note, don’t quit your day job too soon. No matter what you are doing as a side hustle it will take some time for it to fully form and you don’t want to put too much pressure on your business to start generating revenue right way. You want it to be fun and with time, nurturing, love, and a whole lot of effort, your side business can become your bill payer and you can officially fire your boss. That I can say is a very very good day.
Much love.
