How to Positively handle your emotions
You have already heard much said about the power of positive thinking so I will not spend more of your time talking about that. However, I will say that much of the “Power of positive thinking” movement leaves out the part where you need to let yourself feel the not so nice emotions for a moment then switch to something else.
In hypnotherapy it’s called the “swish method” or the “flip switch technique” depending on which teacher you had in school.
Your mind is a bit like a child with ADD, in that if in the middle of a feeling bad moment someone yells the word SQUIRLE! Your mind instantly starts thinking of those furry things you love that hang out in your backyard. And this is a good thing because it means you can flip the switch on feeling bad at any time.
So, here’s what you do when you are feeling stuck in not so nice emotions.
- Let yourself feel it: Yep, you gotta let yourself feel bad or whatever, intensely for a period of time. If you give emotions your full attention, they will usually dissipate within 2-5 minutes, usually less. You won’t get stuck, it’s not possible.
- Flip the script: using one of the tools below:
–Movement: The energy you are using to feel anxious can also be channeled into positive activities like cleaning your house or going for a run. Decide now if you want to feel anxious or feel productive. You choose.
–Make a “Happy Board”: not a vision board which is usually about goals and the work to achieve those goals. A Happy board is full of images that just make you happy when you look at them. Mine is covered with pictures of Puppies and kittens…and a Porsche.
Google “Catalina Island fox” if you need some insanely cute pictures for yours.
–Take a moment to feel grateful for something, anything even if it’s just something stupid like that first hour of the new and much hyped “Suicide Squad” movie didn’t suck. The second hour did…let’s be honest.
Start thinking now of fun things you can do to flip the script when you start to feel stuck in a less desirable emotion. Make your “happy board” go get some new running shoes and decide now that now matter what happens, it will all be ok. Because it will.
