Ok so I couldn’t fit all the advice I wanted to in the last blog so here are a few more bits of money tips. But let’s start with a great quote.
“People will do an infinite number of unnatural acts to try and keep the status quo going”
Adam Taggert- Host Thoughtful Money
The most important advice I can give anyone when it comes to money is this, make changes as soon as you see challenges coming and cut more than you think you need to from the budget.
Don’t be that person who gets laid off, figures it will be ok for a while, doesn’t even apply for unemployment right away then goes shopping on their credit card. You don’t need the status quo as much as you need to be realistic about what’s happening in your life.
FOMO (fear of missing out is the enemy of saving: Marketing companies know the best words to say and ploys to activate a person’s natural fear of missing out. Don’t allow yourself to be manipulated.
Learn to be less afraid of running out and more resourceful when you do. Example, learn how to make oat milk and other common foods. It’s easier than you think.
Try cancelling things: It won’t work every time, but I recently cancelled Sirus XM, 1 month later I got a ½ off offer which I didn’t take. Two months later the price went down to $5 a month!! Now we’re talking. Tried that trick on every other account we had and saved money on HBO, peacock and a couple other things. Highly recommended the “Cancel” trick.
Learn how to make things: Things like Oat Milk in the blender, refried beans and applesauce in the insta-pot are easy-peasy, and cheap. As a bonus it’s kindof fun to be creative in the kitchen.
Learn about Macro Economics: It’s much easier to win a game if you learn how to play it. Highly recommended the following shows on YouTube. I would include the links but if I put too many this newsletter would be in your spam folder, if it isn’t already.
-Thoughtful Money with Adam Tagert (Highly recommended-never miss an episode)
-Michael Bordenaro
-Car questions answered (this guy is just fun to watch)
-J Bravo (his stuff can be controversial so if you subscribe just know you will likely get unsubscribed by YouTube without your permission, honestly that’s just part of the fun
-Anything show Danielle Di Martino booth is a guest on-She’s amazing.
At some point you can’t cut anymore to save money, so you have to just make more. So..
Side Hustle time!: I can’t believe I waited almost till the end to push you to get a side hustle..such restraint.
Everyone needs one of those! Your most ideal side hustle is something that comes so naturally to you that you don’t even think of it as a gift, and you maybe even feel bad charging for it. Yes, that thing your soul loves doing. Your soul is screaming right now that it wants to do that for money. I can hear it, can you? It’s also something not too far afield of what you already do.
Ask for a raise?.: Um, normally I would say “yes, go for it!” but use your intuition on this one. When companies are struggling to keep the lights on, and people paid might not be the best time to ask for more money.
Instead: Tell them you would like to be more valuable to the company and ask if there are any new responsibilities you can take on to help out. Especially if that “New skill” will help you with your side hustle..see what I did there..see? I mean it, get a side hustle!!
Intuitively I am seeing that the inflexible “I won’t do anything that’s not in my job description” types might be the first to go and the “sure I will do what needs to get done” types will be better positioned in the new economy.
Bottom line:
-Learn new things, be flexible but mostly become aware of your choices and work on making better ones.
And know that no matter what you are loved valued and cared about.
