Goal achieving (the hard part) vs goal setting (the easy part) are two vastly different things, as those of you who are doing this same unachieved new year’s resolutions as last year already know.
Let this year be the year that you set goals and make them happen!
This is the first of a 3-part series on goals and in this first part we are going to start with the basics.
Key Ingredients of a successful goal.
The goal needs to be Highly specific: Sorry but “Eat healthier” does not qualify. Your mind wants things that it can picture and schedule. As in: “I want to eat Paleo M-F 100% of the time and 80% of the time on Saturday and Sunday.
Focus: A goal says “I am focusing on this thing at this time” which means I am not focusing on everything else I could be doing.
Create Short Sprints: The best goals ideally are achievable in 22-30 days MAX. If you have a goal that takes over a year like dropping 60L-Bee’s or paying down a chunk of debt I can already tell you that by February you will have lost steam and forgotten all about it unless you break it into smaller chunks like: “Going to the gym 15 times in 22 days” or “Cutting $500 a month out of the budget
A plan: Make day one of any sprint the day you decide what route you will use to get where you are going and put those steps on your calendar.
Focus on the actions of the goal: Goals don’t get achieved without certain actions done daily or almost daily. Make the activities the focus rather than just the goal so that those activities become healthy habits you keep up long after the goal is reached.
And most importantly…
Add an element of fun: Put stickers on a calendar every time you do all your goal related tasks for the day, then pay yourself a little something for each of those stickers. Use that cash as “Play money” to buy yourself something fun.
Like Mary Poppins said, “A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down” Let a reward done in a playful way be that sugar that makes the whole thing happen.
More on this next week but this week but for now start working on those amazing New Years goals and let me know if you need any support.
Love yourself enough to do the difficult work of change.
Namaste.
