Me too and the changes all of us have to make
Up until now, none of the people accused of sexual misconduct were anyone I cared about. But, recently I lost a personal hero. Morgan Spurlock, creator of “Supersize me,” one of the most influential movies about health of all time. That is the movie and that inspired me to write my weight loss book, “Feed Your Real Hunger.” YouTube did the right thing by pulling “Supersize Me 2” from its lineup, but I am still very sad to see someone I had admired turn out to be a sexual predator.
Disclosure seems to be what is going on now in all areas, and I admit, it really hasn’t been easy. Is there anyone who wasn’t nauseated by hearing what Dr. Larry Nassar was able to get away with for so long, right under the nose of USA gymnastics? We are finally seeing the truth behind a lot of people and situations that had quietly gone unseen.
– Video cameras have forced us to see how truly different the white experience with police is from the black experience, and we can no longer pretend that’s not happening.
– #metoo is now revealing story after story about how bad it can be for some woman in the work place.
– Literal fake news planted on Facebook, believed by so many, has shown us how naive we really can be, and how easily we can be roused to real anger by the media.
– Our many heroes are falling, silent heroes are being lifted, and things are getting more real.
I used to like Bikram Yoga, but I can’t even see that name anymore and not think about all the women Bikram Choudhury (allegedly) raped. And don’t get me started on how much I will miss Kevin Spacy in House of cards; but, that house of cards needed to fall just like all the others. As a result of that, things will change.
Things must change.
The uber app is off my phone, Morgan Spurlock is off my twitter feed, I have switched yoga studios, and life in general goes on. I am hoping we don’t find anything bad about Amazon President Jeff Bezos, or we all will have to leave our house to shop.
In the next year, I believe there will be a lot more disclosure. Many more heroes will fall, and that is not really a bad thing, but I admit it’s not so easy to watch.
Hang in there everyone! It’s bound to be a wild ride, but in general, I am liking where this is going.
P.S. – Is it wrong that I still REALLY REALLY want to see Supersize me 2?
