Let’s talk about Mask etiquette:
I know this is hard, but it’s time to get comfortable with the idea that the mask isn’t going anywhere for a while. So, I thought I would list out some Mask Etiquette for you all to enjoy.
-Wave or Say “Hello” to people you pass. They can’t see you smile. Its time to share a friendly gesture much more than you did before, people are pretty tense right now.
-Speak LOUDLY and CLEARLY when placing a food order. Otherwise “No bun & no Mayo” becomes “Extra bun, extra mayo” though they may have been messing with me since I can’t imagine anyone getting that wrong.
-A Mask is a sign of respect: Even if you personally are not worried, wear a mask as respect the others around you who are worried. Everyone is in a different place emotionally on this issue and a mask says, “I respect your fears and I will help protect you from me”.
Practice being present: Worry makes you feel like you are doing something about this situation but in reality, it’s not productive. Work on bringing your mind back to the present and observing something nice in front of you rather than what’s going on in the world.
-Patience, Patience, patience: I recently witnessed an angry confrontation at the Gelson’s Grocery store where a woman claiming to be, of all things, a Yoga instructor started yelling at a cashier about fake news and global conspiracies when she was told she had to wear a mask in the store. The manager handled it with the patience of a saint, offering to take her list and grab everything for her but that she couldn’t get it herself without a mask. She left instead; people clapped…it was pretty funny actually.
As I said I am very pro mask but, more than that I am extremely Anti-yelling at a cashier or anyone in the service industry. They don’t get paid enough for that.
-Send people love: This may sound a bit woo-woo but as people walk by mentally send them love and imagine good things happening to them, especially the crazy person at Gelson’s…actually forget her, send it to the cashier. I promise it will make you feel better. If everyone did this at least once a day the world would be a much more peaceful place.
Send yourself some love today. It’s been rough for most of us even those whose jobs are not going anywhere. Know that you are loved and that we really are all in this together.
