A question I get asked a lot is “Will my partner change (this behavior that I can’t deal with) or should I move on”, usually in reference to a cheater or a chronic liar.
And the answer is sometimes… but not usually. The truth is people really don’t change their very often so it’s helpful to observe what their default behavior is so that you can predict how they will typically deal with things in the future.
Here’s what I mean.
The person who shows up 15 minutes late for a date will likely also:
-Show up late for every important meeting
-Be really late picking you up from the airport. Which really sucks! BTW
The person who has a loose interpretation of the “truth” in one area of their life probably..
-Say “that’s not what happened” when you point out troubling behavior.
-Lie about stupid stuff so often that you question if anything they tell you is true..and frankly you are wise to question it.
-Might also cheat on their taxes and not see a problem with that.
Got it Jill so basically the “once a cheater always a cheater thing is totally true, right?”
Yes, But on the flip side:
-That honest dependable friend will probably always be that way.
-That guy who is loyal, kind, and honorable probably will not cheat on you with your sister then steal your phone. (a real client example, by the way..)
Bottom line:
If someone’s default is to “do the right thing” they probably will.
If the default is to “do the wrong thing’ or “kindof do the OK thing sometimes” Don’t expect them to be that reliably honest in your life.
So, whether it’s a romantic connection, a business connection or even a coworker, peoples troubling behavior probably won’t change. You have to decide what, how or if you want to deal with that.
If its your boss and you like your job then you might put up with more than you would someone you are considering marry.
