Thank you..no, no, no, thank YOU!!!
Ah..Thanksgiving 6 hours of cooking for 20 minutes of eating followed by 3 hours of listening to others watch football while I hide in the garage and watch the dog show.
I do love the idea of gratitude but not the way its done at thanksgiving where I sit around with family and say a couple of things I am grateful for then pass the talking stick to the next person who would rather be eating then participating in this ritual.
Let’s flip the script and make it the one day we just enjoy eating, hanging out with family, being in connection with others and watching the dog show..ha! Not football dad, not this year!!
AND
Let’s practice expressing gratitude for OURSELVES every day of the year and make that a thing.
Here’s what it looks like.
Every night you take a moment and thank yourself for 5 great things you did that made your world better in some way. Even if it was just getting some household chore done or that you finally figured out the perfect sleeping temp to set the thermostat.
“That sounds familiar Jill, like from every self help book I have ever read but you left something out”
Now I am 100% sure you have heard this advice before. I am also 100% sure you were told to mention 2 things you wish you had done better. To that part I say BOOOO!!! NO! And NO! NO! NO! just NO!
“But Jill, why? That great advice.”
No its not, you already know you didn’t work out, that you dug into the bag of Halloween candy to find the last Kit Kat bar (good for you by the way, great find!). And I am also 1000% you already said something not nice to yourself about it already so move on.
“But Jill that’s selfish, I should express gratitude for my family.”
Yes, its selfish but I am sure you could use some healthy selfishness right now.
Its important that you learn to be your own best friend. Does your best friend ever say “great job on that book you wrote BUT you should have worked on marketing yesterday rather than watching Season 5 of the crown”?
Nope. She is always on your side no matter how wrong you are and she doesn’t care if you didn’t work out. Work on being that for yourself, starting now, today even. And don’t forget to set the DVR for the National Dog Show on NBC..its always great!!
Much love and thank you for being a part of my tribe for this past year. I really appreciate you!! Plus, I am grateful to myself for sitting down and writing this blog..see that’s how its done!!
More love and have a great holiday!
