What really happens when a woman goes to the doctor.
A recent health scare caused me to freak the heck out! (just keeping it real here guys). I went running crying to my hypnotherapist and medical intuitive reader (yes, I use those services too) where I got assured that I was indeed going to die just like everyone else but not from the most recent incident. I ALSO went to a medical doctor to confirm all was going to be ok by the way (again, keeping it real).
This prompted a meeting with my circle of supportive woman where I got an earful about what its like when a woman goes to a doctor for advice. Since we are so sensitive you know and prone to exaggeration. I hope you can hear my sarcastic voice in that sentence.
Below are some of the gems I heard:
- You don’t have endometriosis – you need an SSRI.
- You don’t have bladder pain – you are sexually frigid.
- Your thyroid levels are fine- Eat less, exercise more. You are just getting older.
- Your thyroid levels are fine-Hair falling out is normal for a woman in their forties. Here is a prescription for an anti-depressant.
- Your tooth pain is in your head the Xray shows no problems. You seem to have a low tolerance for pain. -This turned out to be an abscessed tooth in a spot that’s hard to see on an older x ray machine.
And of course, my all-time favorite, the one I have heard many times over the years from a few women. “You are done having kids you don’t need your ovaries and uterus-get that hysterectomy, there is no reason not to” OMG!! There are like a million reasons why you might not want to unless you have no other choice so don’t get me started..
So why am I bringing this up?
Well, because this issue is up for a lot of women right now and ladies, let’s be honest, when it comes to going to the doctor or the mechanic woman have a vastly different experience than men, that’s just the way it is. And since I honestly don’t see that changing any time soon there are a few things we as woman need to change.
–More research on our health issues: The days of “doctor knows best” and “Do what the doctor says” are over. Even my aunt who is a medical doctor will tell you she wishes more of her patients would do their own research and take more personal responsibility for their medical choices.
–Work with more woman doctors. If there is a choice of going to a female doctor, I will pick her every time. In my experience the person who actually owns the same equipment as me is more likely to take my complaints about it not working right seriously…just saying.
–Second opinions-even if it means going out of pocket, which frankly it often does. Sometimes you just need a second pair of eyes to help you understand what’s really going on so you can make an informed decision.
–More female support. Let’s face it, woman talk, a lot! And when you get your tribe of woman together you can compare notes on experiences, doctors, articles, medical information and all that goes into making health decisions. Plus, sometimes you just need the support of the mother figures you may not have in your life. If you don’t have a strong female support system..it’s time to make getting one a priority..like now!
Know that no matter what you are important, you matter, and your health is the most important thing you have in your life. Make your physical, emotional and spiritual health a priority and you will find yourself much happier overall.
And if you need support, I do have online appointments available.
Namaste.
