I had an odd conversation with my husband the other day when I said to him “Bye I’m off to the gym” then he asks:
“Is it open? Is it Safe? Isn’t that place dirty? Don’t we have a gym in the garage?”
My replies: “Yes, maybe, dirty? No, more like disgusting and yes but its 100 degrees in there and I want to be around other people working out.”
Then I hear a weak…” Can I come?”
That day and one embarrassingly short workout made me realize that the part of my personality that loves to work out and be around others got left behind 18 months ago and I desperately want her back.
The same was true for my husband who likes to pretend he’s a body builder like the ones at the gym that we both admire-for different reasons of course.
Ask yourself what parts of your personality have you left behind along your life’s path? Don’t limit it just to the pandemic but also ask the bigger questions.
Did you set aside yourself esteem so you could keep a doomed marriage intact?
Did you set aside your dignity and become a supplicant so you can keep a job you hate?
Did you shelve your artistic personality so you could chase a corporate goal that once achieved turned out to be not so great after all?
Those parts of your personality are not dead and gone forever, they are just shoved back in the closet like your workout bag and gym shoes (just go buy new ones) and you can retrieve them anytime…if they still fit.
Close your eyes and imagine yourself going back in time do that version of yourself. Grab ahold of the essence of the qualities you want to bring back with you into the present. You might have to update a few things, but that’s ok. Breath deeply and imagine those qualities coming back to you. Really feel that part of your personality around you now. Open your eyes and take some action, like going to the gym, that will anchor that quality. Do that every day for a week and you will feel better
Love yourself enough to bring back what works and let go of what doesn’t.
Its going to be ok no matter what.
