What your Doctor never told you about weight loss
“I know what to do, I’m just not doing it”
I hear that at least once a day in my hypnotherapy practice, usually from weight-loss clients but also from sales reps trying to improve their numbers. And the worst part is, it’s not even true.
People who say that they think they know what to do, don’t have a real plan for weight-loss success, they have an idea for a plan.
Let’s look at the process in more detail.
Step 1: Make a specific decision or set a goal. Example: lose 20 pounds by summer. Saying, “I want to be thinner,” is not specific enough.
Step 2: Create a plan.
What? A plan? But all I must do is eat better and exercise, right?
Nope, no, and sorry, but no. Weight loss like any other worthwhile endeavor involves lots of little plans.
Decide on an eating plan. Basically, what you have been doing got you to this place so how are you going to do it differently? It must be more detailed than “just stop eating junk.” Let’s say you decided to do Keto (which I like for most people).
What, Where, When, and Why:
Here’s an example:
What: Let’s say you decide to do Keto. You need to spend time researching exactly how to do it in a way that works with your lifestyle and situation.
Where: Where is that healthier food coming from? Are you making it or buying it pre-made and what do you do when you go out? If you are making it, you need to look at the next one.
When: Your eating schedule will be important, but just as important, when are you going to do all that cooking?
Why: This one is very important. You need a good emotion-filled reason why you want to do this, and it must be something that gets you really excited. “I want to wear the beautiful size-6 bikini I saw at Pac- Sun bathing suit store” or “I want to lose 20 pounds so I can feel better in my clothes.”
Decide on an exercise plan:
What: Gym 30 minutes cardio, 20 minutes weights.
Where: The gym by my house.
When: Before work at 6am. I am sorry, but the plan of doing it “whenever you have time” is not specific enough.
Why: Because I want to be stronger and look more fit.
There must be a lot of good reasons why because all the rest is a lot of work and you need a very good reason to want to do it.
Most people fail to do any of the above at all. Then after a few weeks of maybe only slightly more than zero progress they give up. Mission failed.
If you want to succeed at something as big as changing your entire body through weight loss you must spend a lot of time developing a detailed plan and figuring out how to make that new way of eating part of your overall lifestyle.
Lastly but most importantly, revise, revise, revise as needed. And this one is key because as you go along you will figure out more things that don’t work for you than do and shifting your plan is key. For example, the client who says, “I will get up at 6am and go running” but never does because that’s just “too freakin’ early” for them needs to change their workout times or face failure by failing to follow the plan.
I know it’s hard but everything important is hard, and ultimately if it’s worth doing, it’s worth the hard work to make it happen.
Love yourself enough to do that work.
